Juleaften, studie
Artist: Viggo Johansen
Title: Juleaften, studie (Christmas Eve, study)
Date: 1891
Medium: Oil on canvas
This painting is a preparatory study for the artwork displayed in the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen. It is based on a poignant tale from Viggo Johansen's childhood home, where dancing around the Christmas tree was forbidden by his father due to the painful memories it brought of Viggo's deceased brother. However, when Viggo Johansen became a father himself, he embraced the tradition. In 1891, he purchased one of the largest Christmas trees in Copenhagen for his home on Amaliegade 35, where he resided with his wife Martha and their six children. Inspired by the festivities surrounding the tree, he decided to create a painting which remained in the room for four months. During this time, the family took care to preserve the tree's appearance by substituting worn-out fir tree needles with fresh spruce branches. This was necessary for Viggo Johansen to complete his artwork.
